Rehabilitation after Achilles tendon surgery to restore strength, mobility, and safe return to walking and activity.
What is Achilles Tendon Repair?
→ Achilles tendon repair is a surgical procedure used to fix a torn or ruptured Achilles tendon, which is the strong tendon connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. This surgery helps restore strength, stability, and function of the ankle and foot, especially when the tendon is completely torn or severely damaged.
Causes
→ Sudden forceful push-off or jump (sports injuries)
→ Direct trauma or injury to the back of the ankle
→ Sudden increase in physical activity
→ Tight or weak calf muscles
→ Degenerative changes due to aging
→ Use of certain medications (like steroids or fluoroquinolone antibiotics)
→ Poor conditioning or lack of proper warm-up
Symptoms (before surgery – rupture)
→ Sudden sharp pain in the back of the ankle or calf
→ A popping or snapping sound at the time of injury
→ Difficulty walking or inability to push off the foot
→ Weakness in the affected leg
→ Swelling and bruising around the heel
→ A gap or indentation in the tendon area
Diagnosis
→ Clinical examination by a doctor
→ Thompson test (calf squeeze test)
→ Medical history and injury review
→ Ultrasound (to confirm tendon tear)
→ MRI scan (to assess severity and extent of damage)
→ Physical assessment of ankle movement and strength
Treatment Management
→ Surgical repair (suturing the torn tendon ends together)
→ Immobilization with cast or boot after surgery
→ Rest and elevation of the leg
→ Pain management with medications
→ Gradual physiotherapy and rehabilitation
→ Stretching and strengthening exercises
→ Use of assistive devices (crutches initially)
→ Slow return to normal activities and sports under supervision
→ Regular follow-ups to monitor healing and recovery
