What is Ligament Sprain / Ankle Sprain?

→ A ligament sprain is an injury caused by stretching or tearing of ligaments, which are the tough bands of tissue connecting bones at a joint. An ankle sprain is a common type of ligament sprain that occurs when the ankle twists or rolls beyond its normal range of motion, leading to damage of the ligaments around the ankle. These injuries can vary from mild stretching to complete tears and may affect stability and movement.


Causes

→ Sudden twisting or rolling of joint

→ Sports activities

→ Walking or running on uneven surfaces

→ Falls or accidents

→ Improper footwear

→ Weak muscles or poor balance


Symptoms

→ Pain around the joint (especially ankle)

→ Swelling

→ Bruising

→ Difficulty in movement

→ Tenderness

→ Instability of joint


Diagnosis

→ Clinical examination by doctor

→ Assessment of joint stability

→ X-ray (to rule out fracture)

→ MRI (for ligament damage)


Treatment Management

→ RICE protocol (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation)

→ Immobilization (bandage or brace)

→ Pain relief medications

→ Physiotherapy (strengthening and balance exercises)

→ Gradual return to activity

→ Surgery (in severe ligament tears)
