What is Total Hip Replacement (THR)?

→ Total Hip Replacement (THR) is a surgical procedure in which a damaged or diseased hip joint is replaced with an artificial prosthetic joint. It is commonly performed in patients with severe hip arthritis or injury when other treatments fail. The surgery helps relieve pain, improve joint function, and restore mobility, allowing the patient to perform daily activities more comfortably.

Indications (Who needs it)

→ Severe hip arthritis (osteoarthritis / rheumatoid arthritis)

→ Hip joint damage due to trauma or fracture

→ Avascular necrosis of femoral head

→ Chronic hip pain not relieved by conservative treatment

→ Difficulty in walking or performing daily activities

Procedure Overview

→ Removal of damaged femoral head

→ Preparation of hip socket (acetabulum)

→ Placement of artificial socket and femoral component

→ Insertion of prosthetic ball into socket

→ Alignment and fixation of the joint

→ Closure of surgical site

Post-operative Assessment

→ Pain assessment

→ Range of motion (ROM) evaluation

→ Muscle strength testing

→ Gait assessment

→ Monitoring for complications (infection, dislocation)

Treatment Management (Rehabilitation)

→ Early mobilization

→ Physiotherapy (ROM and strengthening exercises)

→ Gait training with walker/crutches

→ Hip precautions (avoid certain movements)

→ Pain management

→ Functional training (ADL activities)

→ Gradual return to normal activities
