Neck muscle tightness causing the head to tilt to one side with difficulty turning the neck.
What is Torticollis?
→ Torticollis, also known as “wry neck,” is a condition where the neck muscles contract abnormally, causing the head to tilt to one side and rotate in the opposite direction. This can lead to restricted neck movement, discomfort, and an asymmetrical head posture. It may be congenital (present at birth) or acquired later in life due to injury or other causes.
Causes
→ Congenital muscle tightness (especially sternocleidomastoid muscle)
→ Birth trauma or difficult delivery
→ Muscle spasm or strain
→ Injury to the neck or cervical spine
→ Neurological disorders
→ Infections or inflammation in the neck
→ Poor posture or prolonged abnormal positioning
Symptoms
→ Head tilted to one side
→ Chin pointing to the opposite side
→ Limited neck movement
→ Neck pain or stiffness
→ Muscle tightness or swelling in the neck
→ Asymmetrical facial or head posture (in chronic cases)
→ Difficulty in turning the head
Diagnosis
→ Clinical examination by doctor
→ Physical assessment of neck movement and posture
→ Medical history evaluation
→ Imaging tests (X-ray, MRI, or ultrasound if needed)
→ Assessment of muscle tightness and neurological function
Treatment Management
→ Physiotherapy (stretching and strengthening exercises)
→ Postural correction and positioning techniques
→ Gentle neck mobilization
→ Use of cervical collar (in some cases)
→ Medications (pain relievers or muscle relaxants if needed)
→ Treatment of underlying cause (if any)
→ Surgery (in severe or resistant cases)
