Total Knee Replacement (TKR)

What is Total Knee Replacement (TKR)?

→ Total Knee Replacement (TKR) is a surgical procedure in which a damaged or diseased knee joint is replaced with an artificial prosthetic joint. It is usually performed in patients with severe knee arthritis or injury when conservative treatments fail to relieve pain and improve function. The surgery helps reduce pain, restore mobility, and improve the quality of life.

Indications (Who needs it)

→ Severe knee arthritis (osteoarthritis / rheumatoid arthritis)

→ Chronic knee pain not relieved by medications

→ Significant joint deformity

→ Difficulty in walking or performing daily activities

→ Failure of conservative treatments (physiotherapy, medications)

Procedure Overview

→ Removal of damaged cartilage and bone

→ Shaping of bone surfaces

→ Placement of artificial prosthetic components (metal and plastic)

→ Alignment and fixation of the new joint

→ Closure of surgical site

Post-operative Assessment

→ Pain assessment

→ Range of motion (ROM) evaluation

→ Muscle strength testing

→ Gait assessment

→ Monitoring for complications (infection, swelling)

Treatment Management (Rehabilitation)

→ Early mobilization (within 24–48 hours)

→ Physiotherapy (ROM and strengthening exercises)

→ Gait training with walker/crutches

→ Pain management

→ Functional training (ADL activities)

→ Gradual return to normal activities
