What is Ataxia?
→ Ataxia is a neurological condition characterized by a lack of coordination of voluntary muscle movements. It occurs due to damage or dysfunction of the cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for balance and coordination. This leads to difficulties in walking, speaking, and performing precise movements. Ataxia can be progressive or temporary depending on its underlying cause.

→ Infections or tumors affecting the brain
Symptoms

→ Unsteady or staggering walk
→ Difficulty in fine motor tasks (writing, buttoning)
→ Slurred speech
→ Tremors
→ Difficulty in swallowing
→ Abnormal eye movements
Diagnosis
→ Clinical examination by doctor
→ Neurological assessment
→ MRI / CT scan of brain
→ Genetic testing (in hereditary cases)
→ Blood tests
→ Coordination and balance tests
Treatment Management
→ Treatment of underlying cause
→ Physiotherapy (balance and coordination training)
→ Occupational therapy
→ Speech therapy
