Lymphedema

What is Lymphedema?

→ Lymphedema is a condition characterized by swelling, usually in the arms or legs, caused by the accumulation of lymphatic fluid due to impaired lymphatic drainage. It occurs when the lymphatic system is damaged or blocked, preventing proper fluid circulation. This leads to persistent swelling, discomfort, and increased risk of infections in the affected area.

Causes

→ Damage to lymphatic vessels or nodes

→ Surgery (especially cancer-related lymph node removal)

→ Radiation therapy

→ Infections (like filariasis)

→ Congenital abnormalities (primary lymphedema)

→ Trauma or injury

Symptoms

→ Swelling in arms or legs

→ Heaviness or tightness

→ Restricted range of motion

→ Thickened or hardened skin

→ Recurrent infections

→ Discomfort or pain

→ Feeling of fullness

Diagnosis

→ Clinical examination by doctor

→ Medical history evaluation

→ Imaging tests (ultrasound, MRI)

→ Lymphoscintigraphy

→ Measurement of limb circumference

Treatment Management

→ No permanent cure, but can be managed

→ Compression therapy (bandages, garments)

→ Manual lymphatic drainage (massage)

→ Physiotherapy and exercises

→ Skin care to prevent infection

→ Elevation of affected limb

→ Surgery (in severe cases)
